Decorate To Celebrate with The Buckle Boutique

MY STORY

     I love coming up with crafting and decorating ideas this time of year.  And since it is challenge time again at Decorate To Celebrate I thought it  the perfect opportunity to share some holiday crafting ideas.  With an item from the dollar store, leftover supplies/scraps and buckles and rhinestone sticker sheets from The BUCKLE BOUTIQUE this is a fun and easy project.  For more information don't forget to check out DECORATE TO CELEBRATE for inspiring ideas for your next party or celebration.

YOUR TURN

What you will need:

-A cutlery drawer organizer or shadowbox/memory frame
-Collection of paper, fabric, stickers etc.
-Clear drying glue -- I like Liquid Stitch

     I find it easiest to pick a color or theme before I start gathering my supplies.  For this example, I went with traditional Holiday colors and some bling.  You can decorate any way you want -- this might be great for holiday photos, using leftover cards or as advent calendar.

    Measure the sections and cut out your fabric, papers or some pretty rhinestone sheets to fit.

    In one section I used potpourri -- I liked the dimension it gave my piece and you get some pretty aroma as a bonus.

   Continue adding elements as desired and that's it.  I also found a mini tree topper star that I thought looked great on top!  You can add ribbon to use this as a wall hanging, cover the entire piece with glass to use as a serving tray.  The possibilities are endless with some leftovers and an inexpensive base to start with.   Happy Holidays!

Upcycle a store bought card for a 3D birthday

     It's challenge time again at Decorate To Celebrate.  Hop over to their blog for a host of creative
ideas for whatever your next celebration is:  DECORATE TO CELEBRATE.

    For today's challenge, I will show you how to take an inexpensive greeting card and make it a custom, 3D card.

YOUR TURN

     I have always been a big fan of the dollar store.  On a recent visit, they had some pretty cards for a low price.  So, just with some scissors, glue, washi tape and pipe cleaners, you can make this card your own.

      Lay out your pipe cleaners and cut accordingly so you have the height you want on the card. Wire cutters worked best.   Wrap the cleaners in washi tape, leaving a bit of the top exposed for the candle "wick".

     Cut out the cake, of whatever image you are using.  Save the rest of the card.  Lay out on a piece of card stock and lightly pencil in around the top for your placement of the "candles".

    Glue onto your card stock and let dry.

     Once dry, glue on your birthday case image.  Gluing on top of the washi tape candles, gives a nice 3D look to your card.

     Cut out with decorative scissors and then adhere to another piece of paper and adhere to your blank card.

     I then cut out part of the inside wording and used on the front of the card as well as a decorative flower from the inside of the card.  And that's it.  Such a fun and simple way to create handmade with a store bought item.

A Gift Box For Baby

     I love finding ideas for re-purposing or upcycling in my crafts.  For this challenge, I created a gift box for the new baby which makes a nice keepsake item that the new parents can use.  They can keep special items in it like that first lock of hair or first tooth or even remove the box cover and hang as wall art.  Here we go!...

YOUR TURN

     You will need very few supplies for this project:

• Any size box
• Paper of your choice - sample uses Paper Source paper
• Backing papers - again using Paper Source product
• Domino shaped wood pieces - from Michaels
• White , gold acrylic paint and crackle paint - from Michaels
• Stickers - from Michaels
• Decorative clothespins - from Michaels

     Paint the inside and all surfaces of your box -- this sample used gold acrylic paint, but use any color that complements your idea.  Once dry, place the cover upside down on the reverse side of your paper and adhere.  Handmade paper tends to be thinner than card stock, so be frugal with how much glue you use.

    Paint the domino shaped wood pieces in white (or whichever color you have chosen).  I like the look of a little rustic mixed with the metallic in the paper and stickers so after your color paint has dried, apply a layer of crackle paint.  It takes about 2 -4 hours to dry and you will be left with a little weather beaten effect.

   Once the paints have dried, apply your stickers as desired. 

    Then glue to a sheet of backing paper.  (Currently I'm obsessed with the gold and light pink palette.)  Cut out using decorative scissors. HINT:  Based on the size of your box, and the amount of letters  you need, lay down on the paper to insure everything fits on the box top.  If you are using a lot of letters, you may need to trim your backing paper more than in this example.

    Glue your backing paper with the wood shape onto another sheet of card stock -- for this example I used gold glimmer.  Cut out.

    Clip your clothespin onto the papers and glue into place.  

 

  I think this is an adorable way to give a gift to the new baby and their parents.  Happy crafting!!

Washi Tape Coasters

MY STORY

     I am happy to see that the Washi Tape trend is far from over.  I love this product -- it comes in a large array of colors, patterns and widths.  It is easy to use -- to cut and apply and it sticks on almost anything.

    I had a bunch of photo coasters left over and thought that Washi Tape would be a quick and fun way to decorate them.  I have used these photo coasters on other projects so I thought they were perfect to use for this, even if the photo part is covered up.

     You can also use plain white tiles from the home store which you can get at really low prices.  This is a nice housewarming or hostess gift and you can even use these finished tiles as home decor items. 

YOUR TURN

   Choose the Washi Tape colors/patterns  you want to use.  I recommend using three different colors, in at least two different widths.  I tested a few different layouts and for me this looked the best.  And now I am currently obsessed with Tiffany Blue and Gold.  But this project can be adapted to any holiday or event, simply by choosing different tapes.  These are all readily available online and at craft stores and the rolls go a long way.  (HINT:  I tried using duct tape but the washi tape works much better.)

   Simply lay out patterns and play with what looks best to you.  The tape sticks well, but is easy to remove if you want to change your design.  Lay out and I like leaving tails off the edges as it is easier to trim that way.  When you are ready to trim, lay the coaster upside down as it is easier to trim that way. Smooth out any bumps you may have on the tape.

   Once you have applied the tape, use Mod Podge as a sealant.  Mod Podge comes in different finishes.  I choose the Antique Matte finish for this product, but any finish would be fine.

   Apply a thin coat with a foam brush.  Let dry.  Apply two more coats, making sure each coat dries before applying the next layer.  The Mod Podge dries clear, so don't worry if it looks cloudy at first.

   The photo coasters also came with a stand which I added tape to for a quick hostess or housewarming gift.

   And that's it....it is so easy and it becomes addictive after a while.  You will be using Washi Tape on everything!
